[/b] – For serious rule-breaking, a teacher can require the student to serve a detention with him/her or another teacher. These detentions have ranged from writing lines to venturing into the Forbidden Forest with Hagrid late at night. Sent to their Head of House – students who misbehave in class can be sent straight to their Head of House. This can result in a warning or a detention (or some biscuits). Deduct house points – the headmaster, prefects, Heads of House, and teachers can deduct house points from students who have broken rules. The house points system at Hogwarts represents a classic example of rule enforcement through peer pressure. In the annual inter-house competition, students of each house earn points for good behavior and lose points for rule-breaking. Thus, there is a lot of peer pressure not to lose points for their House. *Note: Prefects and Head Boy/Girls can only deduct house points, not give out detentions, although they can report them to the teachers.[/s] Punishments are now dealt with the Cruciatus Curse[/ul] [/size]
